If you want to have your Vantage Pro2 or Vantage Vue console in a location far from your computer, but you also want to have data flowing to the computer via WeatherLink, add a Weather Envoy to your system. Plug your WeatherLink data logger into the Envoy and your computer or router. The Envoy will receive transmissions from your integrated sensor suite, or from your console, and transfer it to the computer or WeatherLink.com. Now you can have your console by your bed, or in the kitchen, wherever you access it most, without having to take it back to the computer to download data.

Weather Envoy allows you to skip the console altogether and view your data on your computer with WeatherLink or online with WeatherLinkIP.

Install Envoy with a Solar Power Kit in a remote field installation. Manually download data periodically to your laptop. Envoy includes inside temperature and barometer. If you are installing your Envoy outside in a shelter, you can add an external temperature probe to replace the “inside” temperature reading.

How does an EnviroMonitor Node work?

The EnviroMonitor Node is simply a relay that transmits data from the sensor array to the Gateway so that it can be uploaded to the WeatherLink Cloud. The sensors are installed directly in the Node. The Node processes the data and sends it to the Gateway and to other Nodes via the mesh network. The Gateway then uploads the data to the Cloud via cellular or Wi-Fi communication.

How do I Install an EnviroMonitor Node?

The first step to installing your Node is planning which sensors you need and where to mount the Node or Nodes and Gateway.

The Nodes should be placed where the data is needed, and so that they have unobstructed lines of sight to the Gateway or another Node. Obstructions like hills, large metal barriers, or trees could block the signal – you might need to plan additional Nodes to act as repeaters to avoid such obstructions. Mounting the Nodes and Gateway as high off the ground as possible can increase the transmission range. Since the Nodes communicate with each other, you can create a chain or mesh network that covers a distance much longer than the transmission range of a single Node.

Each Gateway can receive data from up to 32 Nodes. (You can add additional Gateways to your account to receive data from additional Nodes.)

Once you have a plan for where your Gateway and Nodes should be mounted, The EnviroMonitor app will walk you through the steps to set up and mount each component of your system. You will need to go to the iOS App Store or Google Play Store and download the EnviroMonitor App onto your smartphone.

Where can I use an EnviroMonitor Node?

The EnviroMonitor Node is designed for use in fields, greenhouses, gardens — even those that are quite remote. It is solar-powered and uses four D-cell batteries for backup. It is also self-contained and weather resistant. You can mount it on a post or pole, and it comes with a selection of mounting hardware for various mounting situations. You can add a long-range antenna that can extend the transmission range up to 10,000′. This makes it perfect for use in remote locations or building an array of sensors across a large field.

How does the EnviroMonitor IP Gateway work?

The IP Gateway uploads data to the WeatherLink Cloud using a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. It receives data from sensors in the Nodes via mesh transmission. Nodes should be sited for optimal transmission, but, since the Nodes transmit to each other, they can act as repeaters and the mesh becomes self-optimizing for reliable data transmission. Next, you install the IP Gateway at a central location. Finally, install the EnviroMonitor App, open it, and follow the prompts for setting the system up.

The system comes with easy-to-follow instructions for siting and setting up your array of Nodes and sensors. Each Node must be set up on the Gateway. You can connect up to 32 Nodes with four sensors each.

What can I use to access the data from my EnviroMonitor IP Gateway?

You can access your data on any connected computer or smartphone. Simply log into your account at WeatherLink.com or the WeatherLink and Davis Mobilize apps to view and manage your data. Both apps, as well as the EnviroMonitor app used for setup, are available for iOS in the App Store or the Google Play Store for Android users.

Where can I use my EnviroMonitor IP Gateway?

You can use your IP Gateway anywhere with AC-power and Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Normally, this would be inside, but you can install it outside where there is AC-power by using a Davis Universal Shelter. It should be within transmission range of one or more of your Nodes.

The type of environment will determine the optimal transmission range from Node to Node and Node to Gateway. For instance, if you are using the Gateway underneath the canopy of an orchard, the range is between 300-500 ft. If Nodes are installed in a field of corn above the maximum height of the crop, the range is 1,700 – 2,000 ft. The transmission distance could be reduced to below 300 feet if the Gateway or Nodes are behind an obstruction.

The system is designed to work with a Davis Instruments cabled or wireless GroWeather sensor suite. The Nodes support a long list of sensors from Davis Instruments, as well as trusted third-party sensors. You can collect data from soil moisture/temperature, leaf wetness, pressure, carbon dioxide sensors, as well as flow meters and more.

You can install the Davis WeatherLink app by searching for it in the iOS App Store or Google Play Store on your phone.

How often does WeatherLink Live update?

Data for each parameter is sent from the sensor to the WeatherLink Live at different intervals. For example, wind speed is updated every 2.5 seconds as it can change very quickly. Rainfall, which changes a little more slowly, updates every 10 seconds, and barometer, which changes more slowly than either wind or rain, every minute. When your WeatherLink Live and your phone are on the same Wi-Fi network, you will see updates of your current data on your phone as they happen. When not on the same Wi-Fi network, the app updates current conditions every minute.

Davis Instruments is a leader in smart-sensing for agriculture. The Davis EnviroMonitor Gateway allows you to create an array of sensors to monitor micro-climate conditions in your crops. This allows you to take precise actions to ensure the greatest yield. The EnviroMonitor Gateway is a hub that allows you to connect up to 32 Nodes with four sensors per Node. It then automatically uploads the data to the Cloud via cellular connection, where you can access it to make crop management decisions.

How does the Davis EnviroMonitor Gateway work?

The first thing you need to do is to decide where and what type of data you want to collect. You need to decide how many sensors you need and where they should be placed. Once your system arrives, you should install the EnviroMonitor app on your smartphone. You can find it in the Google Play Store or iOS App Store. The app will guide you through setting up the system and connecting it to WeatherLink.com. It will also instruct you on connecting the Nodes to the Gateway and installing your sensors on the Node.

The instructions walk you through everything you need from confirming your cellular signal strength at intended node sites to finding the optimal sites for placing your nodes. You will also receive a user’s manual with diagrams and easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions. The manual is also available here on the Davis Instrument website.

What can I use to access the data from my EnviroMonitor Gateway?

You can access your data in four different ways. You can use your phone, tablet, or computer to view it via WeatherLink.com. The WeatherLink mobile app lets you access the data from anywhere you have a cell phone signal. You can also use the Mobilize app that is geared toward agricultural operations and crop management.

Where can I use my Davis EnviroMonitor Gateway?

One of the best features of this system is that you can use it almost anywhere there is a cellular connection. You do not need to house it in a building or be near a power outlet. The EnviroMonitor Gateway comes with a 5-watt solar panel that provides sufficient power to operate it for a long time in addition to a 6-volt rechargeable battery for backup. It is also housed in a self-contained weather-resistant shelter to protect the electronics. If weather conditions should become unfavorable, you can have the system send you an email to let you know.

For longer-range capabilities, you can add the 8dBi EnviroMonitor long range antenna that extends the range of the system to up to 10,000 feet. With the capability to connect up to 32 Nodes which can transmit to each other, you can cover a large area fwith a seamless mesh of data sensors. The unit is only designed for use in the United States, and you can use it anywhere LTE cellular service is available. The system is made to operate with the Davis cabled GroWeather Sensor Suite, and the Nodes support a long list of sensors from Davis and other third-party suppliers.
