How does an EnviroMonitor Node work?

The EnviroMonitor Node is simply a relay that transmits data from the sensor array to the Gateway so that it can be uploaded to the WeatherLink Cloud. The sensors are installed directly in the Node. The Node processes the data and sends it to the Gateway and to other Nodes via the mesh network. The Gateway then uploads the data to the Cloud via cellular or Wi-Fi communication.

How do I Install an EnviroMonitor Node?

The first step to installing your Node is planning which sensors you need and where to mount the Node or Nodes and Gateway.

The Nodes should be placed where the data is needed, and so that they have unobstructed lines of sight to the Gateway or another Node. Obstructions like hills, large metal barriers, or trees could block the signal – you might need to plan additional Nodes to act as repeaters to avoid such obstructions. Mounting the Nodes and Gateway as high off the ground as possible can increase the transmission range. Since the Nodes communicate with each other, you can create a chain or mesh network that covers a distance much longer than the transmission range of a single Node.

Each Gateway can receive data from up to 32 Nodes. (You can add additional Gateways to your account to receive data from additional Nodes.)

Once you have a plan for where your Gateway and Nodes should be mounted, The EnviroMonitor app will walk you through the steps to set up and mount each component of your system. You will need to go to the iOS App Store or Google Play Store and download the EnviroMonitor App onto your smartphone.

Where can I use an EnviroMonitor Node?

The EnviroMonitor Node is designed for use in fields, greenhouses, gardens — even those that are quite remote. It is solar-powered and uses four D-cell batteries for backup. It is also self-contained and weather resistant. You can mount it on a post or pole, and it comes with a selection of mounting hardware for various mounting situations. You can add a long-range antenna that can extend the transmission range up to 10,000′. This makes it perfect for use in remote locations or building an array of sensors across a large field.

What do air quality monitors do?

An air quality monitor has a fan that draws in the air surrounding the monitor. The air passes through as a laser shines through the air inside the sensor. Particulate matter like dust, mold, pollen block the light. The sensor can determine the concentration and size of particles based on the strength of the light that reaches the other side.

How accurate are air quality monitors?

The air quality sensor on the AirLink can measure particulates as small as 0.3 microns with a concentration accuracy of +/- 10 micrograms per cubic meter.

The device can provide a reading of particulates from less than 1 micron (PM1) to less than 10 microns (PM10). Inhalable particulates that are 2.5 microns or smaller are small enough to penetrate deeply into your lungs and can cause difficulty breathing in some people.

You can choose from air quality indexes of 9 different countries including Canada, UK, US, Mexico, China, South Korea, EU, Australia, and India.

Why is air quality monitoring important?

Knowing your area’s air quality in real-time is important, especially for those who have heart and lung conditions, asthma, or allergies. You can get this information from the local news station, but air quality can change drastically during the day, especially in areas prone to wildfires or dust storms, and from one location to another. That’s why the AirLink Professional was designed as both an indoor and outdoor air quality monitor.

Children, elders, and women who are pregnant are of special concern when air quality is poor. Wildfires as far as 200 miles away can produce dangerous particulates of PM2.5 or smaller which are hazardous for the lungs and can further aggravate respiratory issues like asthma and bronchitis.

How do I read an air quality monitor?

The AirLink provides information about dust, smoke, pollution, dew point, and heat index. This information is automatically uploaded and presented in color-coded graphs that allow you to track changes over time. This allows you to monitor the air quality for sudden changes even if you cannot tell the difference physically. With two AirLinks, you can compare indoor and outdoor air quality. How do I connect to WeatherLink Live?

Connecting your Vantage Vue or Vantage Pro2 system to WeatherLink Live, and WeatherLink Live to the internet is easy. You will need a WiFi or router Ethernet connection, a smartphone, and 4 AA batteries. The first thing to do is to install the WeatherLink app on your phone, open the app, and log in by creating your free account.

Next, plug your WeatherLink Live into AC power, and install batteries for backup.The blue LED will start to flash. Follow the prompts on the WeatherLink app to connect your WeatherLink Live to the internet. The LED will go solid when the phone is connected to the internet.

Next you will set up your WeatherLink Live’s name and location by following the prompts. Then, you’ll choose your upload mode: Wi-Fi or Ethernet. For Wi-Fi, you’ll enter your network password and tap Connect. Finally, you’ll set up your transmitting station or stations — the transmitting station or stations to which the WeatherLink Live will “listen.” The app will walk you through all the steps.

You will see your station’s current condition data on the app and on WeatherLink.com within a few minutes.

How does Davis WeatherLink Live work?

The system works by collecting readings from sensors located on your Vantage Vue or Vantage Pro2 weather stations, or any other Davis transmitting station. (For example, you can set up a temperature/humidity sensor, installed in a Davis Sensor Transmitter, in your basement. It will report to the WeatherLink Live along with your station’s sensor suite data.) The WeatherLink Live can receive data from up to 8 different transmitters.

How do I install WeatherLink?

Your WeatherLink Live can be placed anywhere inside with access to AC power and within the transmission range of the transmitting station or stations (up to 1,000’/300 m). You can install the Davis WeatherLink app by searching for it in the iOS App Store or Google Play Store on your phone.

How often does WeatherLink Live update?

Data for each parameter is sent from the sensor to the WeatherLink Live at different intervals. For example, wind speed is updated every 2.5 seconds as it can change very quickly. Rainfall, which changes a little more slowly, updates every 10 seconds, and barometer, which changes more slowly than either wind or rain, every minute. When your WeatherLink Live and your phone are on the same Wi-Fi network, you will see updates of your current data on your phone as they happen. When not on the same Wi-Fi network, the app updates current conditions every minute.

Can I use my existing Vantage Vue Console or Vantage Pro2 Console with the new WeatherLink Console?

Yes. Your older console is a powerful transmitter that can retransmit to your new WeatherLink Console. Refer to the original Vantage Pro2 Console User Manual or Vantage Vue Console User Manual to learn how to set up your old console to retransmit on its own ID number. Choose any open ID.

Can I connect to Wi-Fi directly with my WeatherLink Console, or do I need a WeatherLink Live to do that?

The WeatherLink Console has built-in Wi-Fi so you do not need a separate WeatherLink Live device in order to connect to Wi-Fi.

Do I have to connect my WeatherLink Console to Wi-Fi for it to receive data from my Vantage Pro2 or Vantage Vue sensor suite?

No, the WeatherLink Console can receive data from your local sensors without a Wi-Fi connection. However, Wi-Fi is needed for keeping accurate time on the console and for firmware updates (which occur at 3:00 am local time if available). You do NOT need to be logged in to WeatherLink.com; you just need to be connected to Wi-Fi.
