What is a UV sensor?

A Davis Instruments UV light sensor measures the intensity of ultraviolet light in the 280-360 nanometer range, which is the wavelength most responsible for damage to human skin. Davis makes two different UV sensors. One measures UV light in the range that is of concern to human health, whereas the #6450 Davis Solar Radiation Sensor measures light in the 300 to 1,100-nanometer range. This is an excellent sensor for measuring solar irradiance for agricultural applications.

How does a UV sensor work?

The sensor collects UV light and converts it to an electrical signal. Two types of light sensors are available. One uses a photodiode and the other uses a photoresistor.

• Photodiode-type UV sensor

  A photodiode-type UV sensor measures illuminance. When light strikes the photodiode, it energizes the electrons, which causes an electric current. The electric current will be stronger in response to brighter light. The electrical current can then be measured and transformed into a digital or analog output.

• Photo-resistor UV sensor

  A photo-resistor UV sensor works by measuring a change in resistance that is caused by the light available. These types of sensors are less accurate than those that use a photodiode and are usually limited to applications where the only information needed is whether the light is on or off. They can also be used to compare relative light levels in a space.

Davis instruments UV light sensor uses photodiode technology that allows a more accurate picture of the UV light present. Photodiode technology is similar to that used in solar panels. It is also the most useful for scientific use where accuracy and sensitivity are important.

What is a UV sensor made of?

The UV index sensor uses a hermetically sealed silicon photodiode. Silicon is the material of choice for applications where sensitivity and stability are important. Silicon also has a fast response and is efficient at collecting the charge created on the surface of the diode when light strikes it.

Photodiode technology continues to develop in response to challenges in the solar panel field, and sensor technology will benefit from these innovations, too. What do air quality monitors do?

An air quality monitor has a fan that draws in the air surrounding the monitor. The air passes through as a laser shines through the air inside the sensor. Particulate matter like dust, mold, pollen block the light. The sensor can determine the concentration and size of particles based on the strength of the light that reaches the other side.

How accurate are air quality monitors?

The air quality sensor on the AirLink can measure particulates as small as 0.3 microns with a concentration accuracy of +/- 10 micrograms per cubic meter.

The device can provide a reading of particulates from less than 1 micron (PM1) to less than 10 microns (PM10). Inhalable particulates that are 2.5 microns or smaller are small enough to penetrate deeply into your lungs and can cause difficulty breathing in some people.

You can choose from air quality indexes of 9 different countries including Canada, UK, US, Mexico, China, South Korea, EU, Australia, and India.

Why is air quality monitoring important?

Knowing your area’s air quality in real-time is important, especially for those who have heart and lung conditions, asthma, or allergies. You can get this information from the local news station, but air quality can change drastically during the day, especially in areas prone to wildfires or dust storms, and from one location to another. That’s why the AirLink Professional was designed as both an indoor and outdoor air quality monitor.

Children, elders, and women who are pregnant are of special concern when air quality is poor. Wildfires as far as 200 miles away can produce dangerous particulates of PM2.5 or smaller which are hazardous for the lungs and can further aggravate respiratory issues like asthma and bronchitis.

How do I read an air quality monitor?

The AirLink provides information about dust, smoke, pollution, dew point, and heat index. This information is automatically uploaded and presented in color-coded graphs that allow you to track changes over time. This allows you to monitor the air quality for sudden changes even if you cannot tell the difference physically. With two AirLinks, you can compare indoor and outdoor air quality. You can also compare different areas of your home. This information can help you decide to take action when air quality is poor.
